A map of our students' territory

A map of our students' territory

Jul 2nd 2020

This is something.
A book, yes, it's a book, thanks, smartypants. But it's also a portfolio of maps to previously unknown lands. Students of our Mission Center after-school tutoring program wrote poems and stories to describe a momentary island in their specific sea. Their geography is mostly temperate, generally gentle and hospitable, with occasional shoals of jagged rocks or packs of dangerous animals.
There have never been people exactly like these people. They have never told exactly these stories before. These stories are detailed and lushly illustrated maps of what it's like to be these students. All the stories together make a chain of connected islands. They share some weather and some wildlife, but no two are exactly the same.

826 Valencia's mission has always been to bring joy and wonder to our students, to invite them to explore, and to empower them to express themselves through their writing. The world is pretty humongous. Better get started.
